Beach Erosion Control - Cobmoosa Shores

There has been much in the news about the erosion caused along Lake Michigan as a result of the high-water levels. This erosion affects all of us as Cobmoosa residents and most certainly those with properties along Ottawa. As owners, caretakers, friends, and neighbors, we need to work together to understand and discuss what is currently being done, what can be done, and what the process looks like to address the erosion situation. We, as your board, are providing this information as a first step in that direction.

  • You may view via YouTube the Lake Michigan Waterfront Erosion 2020 panel discussion that was held February 27th via this link. Be advised that the video is just under 110 minutes and that the “action” does not start until almost minute 8. After the video loads on your computer you can use the “slide bar” to move forward to the start of the discussion. Ed Dedic attended this discussion. If you have any specific questions after viewing the video you may ask him by using the CONTACT US form on the CSA website.

  • On Saturday, February 1, 2020, about 38 members, friends, neighbors, and caretakers came together to discuss the state of our beach. The “minutes” from this meeting are:
    • The current state of the beach was reviewed by viewing photos provided by Jill Dedic.
    • The group discussed what was currently being done in an attempt to control erosion.
    • A 5-step process to take action on saving property in a safe and responsible manner—which is in alignment with EGLE guidelines, permits, and approvals—was discussed.
    • The group discussed what was NOT to be done (placing used tires, snow fence, pallets, straw, etc.) in an attempt to control erosion on the beach and shoreline. Materials as these that had been temporarily placed on the shoreline in total or in part are now somewhere else in or around Lake Michigan.
    • The group agreed that the next steps should be to form a committee to keep others in the loop while rallying around and assist affected property owners and to collaborate on solutions.
    • Ed Dedic, on behalf of the Cobmoosa Shores Association board, would offer communication tools and coordination efforts to help keep the conversation moving.
    • It was determined that any resolution would be more effective with full participation from affected property owners.
    • The Cobmoosa Shores Association membership as a whole would need to consider any solution put forth by the collective. Further it would likely require a membership vote to utilize any funds to participate for those parcels.
